There is no end to the pearls of the mayor of Durrës, Emiriana Sako. In addition to many scams, the socialist mayor has decided to give herself a hefty salary.
In a meeting away from the attention of the media and while the debate in Durrës has focused on the issue of toxic waste, the Municipal Council has voted a decision to increase the salary of the mayor and her staff.
The approval was made only with the votes of the SP, after the right-wing councilors left the hall. They were the ones who made accusations. According to them, Sako has increased her salary by 57 percent.
"The 57% increase in the salary for the president, the pensioners increase by 4.1%, while the economic aid is about 2200 lek per month, this does not work. We cannot accept this discrimination", said Dritan Burgija, Chairman of the group of DP advisers.
The head of democratic councilors asked for the reaction of the socialists against the return of toxic waste to Durrës, as it harms the entire population, regardless of political affiliation. Then, as a sign of protest, the councilors of the DP and the Freedom Party left the hall. Despite this, socialist councilors and their allies approved salary increases for elected officials and all civil servants. The increase varies from 57% for the mayor, up to 7% depending on the job position. An increase has also been approved for the monthly remuneration of Durrës municipal councilors.
From September 1, the salary increase for mayors, vice-mayors, directors and other employees of the local government came into force. The increase, which is covered by the state budget, varies from 30-40% for each position.
