Greece objected when it came to Albania, insisting that being a country that wants to join the EU, it must comply with European rules and laws.
The Greek newspaper 'Ekathimerini' wrote today that Athens is blocking a Security Protection agreement between the EU and Albania, due to the position of the Albanian government regarding the imprisonment of the mayor of Himara, Fredi Beleri.
The EU is in the process of speeding up the procedures for signing agreements with third countries outside the Union, with the aim of better defense cooperation.
A few days ago, a technical level meeting was held in Brussels, the main purpose of which was to conclude a series of defense and security agreements with countries inside and outside Europe, namely Canada, Japan, Ghana, Moldova, Norway and South Korea .
Greece objected when it came to Albania, insisting that being a country that wants to join the EU, it must comply with European rules and laws.
Against this background, the Greeks proposed North Macedonia as the most suitable country to conclude a defense and security agreement with the EU, as it has shown a better performance in the field of rule of law, while the standardization of the armed forces of the country in question has proceeded at an extremely rapid pace.
The Greek proposal was not accepted, but the Albanian issue did not move forward either, despite very strong support from the Italians, who are also Tirana's closest partner in the EU, which is regularly a source of friction between Rome and Athens.
Regarding the Beleri case, the Greek authorities are waiting to see until January 25, when the trial of the elected mayor of Himara is expected to resume.
Behind the scenes, however, contacts continue, always on the condition that Beleri is sworn into office.
Beleri was arrested in May last year on charges of vote-buying on the eve of the local elections, which he won.
