Renowned German journalist Michael Martens commented on the joint proposal of Edi Rama and Aleksandar Vučić in his newspaper, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, that they are ready to accept a second-rate membership in the EU.
Rama and Vučić are seeking membership in the European single market and the Schengen area. In the interview, Martens said that there is no political climate for EU enlargement, as Germany and France are not ready. He stressed that EU membership is not on the table, adding that neither Serbia nor Albania meet the conditions to be part of the European single market.
" Some people think that they are now looking for shortcuts to access European funds, but it will not work. You cannot become part of Schengen, nor the single market, without fulfilling the main conditions such as the independence of the justice system, freedom of the media. The path to the single market is not that easy ," he said.
According to him, the path to the EU is closed because there is no political majority to accept other countries that could have the right of veto.
" The only country that can be ready for the European market in 2-3 years is Montenegro. But Montenegro does not want this and seeks full membership. But I think it will soon realize that there is no other choice ," Martens said on "Syri TV".
During the interview, Martens emphasized that neither the Schengen area nor the common market can be reached without meeting the conditions in terms of the criteria of the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary. Martens stated that second-hand membership is not an idea that Edi Rama and Aleksandar Vučić invented, but they are the ones who have openly expressed it. According to him, this is an idea that was put forward 10 years ago.
Asked if this means Serbia will drop its obstacles to Kosovo, Martens said that “Serbia’s full membership in the EU is impossible if it does not recognize Kosovo.” “ As for the common market, I don’t know if Serbia will join without recognizing Kosovo as an independent state because this debate is in its infancy ,” he said.
