Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha this Monday on Christmas Eve has published a conversation with his followers on social networks.
He started his speech with the decision of the Assembly that removed his immunity, opening the way for SPAK to arrest him.
Berisha compares Rama to Putin, while saying that he is afraid of the opposition.
"Vladimir Putin recently disappeared Navalnin from prisons, it is not known where he is from. Why? Because there is fear that Navalni will be registered as a presidential candidate. Putin is afraid of Navlan even in prison where he is.
Rama did the same, he did not allow the registration of my name as coalition chairman, contrary to the law. Edi Rama did even more, not that he did not allow the registration of my name, but he did not allow the registration of the DP out of fear and terror.
We are today in this situation where he, with a chain of unconstitutional actions, has decided to sentence Sali Berisha to arrest without any facts, without any documents and evidence for a process that is the most legal that can be done", said Berisha.
The Parliament of Albania approved the request of the Special Prosecutor's Office against Corruption and Organized Crime in Tirana (SPAK) for the granting of authorization for the arrest/deprivation of liberty to former Prime Minister Sali Berisha with 75 votes in favor out of 140 deputies of the Parliament of Albania, while Berisha was present at the session.
After the approval of the request by the Assembly for the removal of the parliamentary immunity, the Special Court of the First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime of Albania must decide on the change of the security measure against the former Prime Minister Berisha.
On December 12, SPAK asked the Parliament of Albania to authorize the arrest/deprivation of freedom of former Prime Minister Berisha, through the replacement of the security measure.
Currently, the former Prime Minister Berisha is under the "compulsion to appear before the judicial police" and "prohibition of leaving the country" measure, suspected of corruption, meanwhile Berisha did not appear before the prosecutor's office according to the decision in question and the prosecutor's office requested authorization from the Assembly for changing the measure.
On October 20, 2023, the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime imposed the measure "compulsion to appear before the judicial police" and "prohibition of exiting the country", for Berisha, suspected by the authorities of corruption, while Berisha's son-in-law, Jamarbër Malltezi, was initially ordered to "prison arrest" and then to "house arrest", suspected of corruption and money laundering.
The object of the investigation of this criminal proceeding, according to SPAK, are the actions carried out by high state officials and other persons for the privatization of the grounds and sports facilities of the "Partizani Football Club" and the "Partizani Multisports Club" in Tirana.
Former Prime Minister Berisha was previously declared person "non grata" by the USA and Great Britain.
Berisha has held the post of president of Albania in the years 1992-1997 and the post of prime minister in the years 2005-2013, while in the elections of April 25, 2021 he was elected deputy by the opposition party, the Democratic Party of Albania.
Currently, Berisha is officially recognized by the Parliament of Albania as a deputy outside the parliamentary groups, due to the recent clashes within the Democratic Party.
