The Central Election Commission has revoked Fredi Beler's mandate as mayor of Himara, declaring it invalid.
The decision of the CEC for Beler comes after his conviction by the Special Appeal with 2 years in prison for vote buying.
The chairman of the CEC, Ilirjan Celibashi, said that based on the decriminalization law, Beleri cannot exercise the function of the mayor of Himara, which has been run by commanding mayors for more than 1 year.
"The decriminalization law is more subject to those people who have taken this task. Not only for Beleri's case, but for any similar case, I regret that because of this law they lose their mandate or public functions, but in the end This is the law. I am not in a position to comment on how we got to this situation. For Beler, there is a definite decision and the law prohibits you from running for office full conviction, I think we are in the conditions of losing the mandate of the mayor of Himarë, Mr. Fredi Beleri, and invalidating this mandate," said Celibashi.
Beleri, who was present at the meeting, accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of asking him not to dismiss him himself, but to pull the 'chestnuts out of the fire' with the hands of the CEC.

Himara is now expected to go to early elections.
Beleri was arrested two days before the local elections of 2023, from which he was elected mayor of Himara. But during the 13 months in custody, this mandate did not become functional as he did not take an oath. The Court of Special Appeals found the 52-year-old guilty, upholding a two-year prison sentence for active corruption in the elections.
After the decision of the CEC, it will be President Bajram Begaj who will announce the new date of the elections. According to the Electoral Code, the head of state, immediately after the notification, must announce early elections no earlier than 30 days and no later than 45 days from the announcement of the vacancy./ Pamphlet
