Leo XIV to Trump: The Church does not engage in war bargains

The American president attacked him as "weak" and "terrible for foreign policy," but the Pope did not back down: The Church does not speak the language of war, but the message of peace. The clash reveals a deep division between the White House and the Vatican.

The clash between Donald Trump and Pope Leo XIV is not just a verbal incident. It is a duel between two worldviews: one that sees force as a political instrument, and the other that sees peace as a moral obligation. This is precisely the essence of the Pope's response, who responded to the American president with a striking sentence: "We are not politicians... we are peacemakers."

Trump launched the attack with a scathing social media post, calling the Pope “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy.” According to Reuters and AP reports, the attack came after the Pope had openly criticized the US-Israeli war against Iran, portraying the conflict as a political and moral madness that is costing the world civil war, instability and fear.

Pope Leo's response came on the papal plane, en route to Algeria, as part of his African tour. He declared that he is not afraid of the Trump administration and that he will not stop speaking "loudly" about the message of the Gospel. He also emphasized that the Church does not operate with the same logic with which states conduct foreign policy, but with the logic of conscience, peace and the protection of human life.

This is where Trump seriously errs in reading the Vatican. The Pope is not entering into a political contest with the White House. He is rejecting the very terrain of this contest. When he says that the Church is not a political actor, but a moral voice, he is reminding the world that there are limits that neither power, nor propaganda, nor military rhetoric can cross without consequences. In this sense, his reaction is much more than personal defense; it is an act of moral positioning in the face of the language of force. This is also clearly read in international reports that present the conflict as a “public feud” between the American president and the head of the Catholic Church.

The fact that the clash is linked to the war on Iran makes this episode even more serious. Pope Leo has been vocal against the use of religion to justify war and against what he has called a dangerous illusion of omnipotence. This is a direct criticism of the logic of superpowers that sell military intervention as order, while producing chaos. This is precisely what seems to have irritated Trump, who seeks political obedience even where the Vatican demands moral repentance.

On a diplomatic level, this confrontation is unusual. It is not often that an American president so openly attacks the Pope, and even more rarely that the Pope responds unequivocally. But Leo XIV did not choose to descend to the level of polemic. He did not attack Trump as a person; he attacked the logic that he represents. And that makes his reaction all the stronger. For where Trump sought political confrontation, the Pope gave a moral response. Where the president sought to present him as a party actor, the Pope defined himself as a voice of peace.

The final message of this clash is clear: the Vatican refuses to align itself with the logic of war just because it comes dressed in a flag, an alliance, or a strategic interest. Pope Leo XIV is sending the signal that the moral authority of the Church will not remain silent in the face of bombings, killed civilians, and the use of God as a cover for violence. And this is precisely what makes this pope a problem for politicians who seek blessings but not conscience. /Pamphlet
