"The freedom of the press is threatened by politics", Tabaku: Rama is

On Freedom of the Press Day, DP MP Jorida Tabaku has accused Prime Minister Edi Rama of saying that verbal violence and threats against journalists by those in power who think they are inviolable erode the foundations of democracy.

Tabaku emphasized that for 12 years the freedom of the media in Albania has continued to decline, adding that in this decade we have seen from the SP a continuous asymmetric attack on the media, defamation and campaigns aimed at attacking journalists who sought the truth and investigated to detect corrupt cases.

The democratic deputy stated that Albania is degrading in the ranking for free media and how politics and power exert pressure.

"For 12 years, media freedom in Albania has continued to decline, not infrequently marking a return to a time that seems distant in the distance, but not mentality.

Verbal violence against journalists, lack of transparency, their self-censorship and, among other things, threats from those in power who think they are invulnerable erode the foundations of a democracy that is weak but needs to be strengthened.

We have seen in this decade of socialist government a continuous asymmetric attack on the media, defamation and campaigns aimed at attacking journalists who sought the truth and investigated to uncover corrupt cases.

We have heard from the mouths of some politicians and rulers who are young in age, but old in behavior and mentality, how they directed their words to journalists, labeling them "paid killers" just because they performed their duty as journalists.

The media has been and continues to be a field of criteria in the integration process, media ownership, the influence of power on editorial chronicles, censorship and self-censorship. But, rather, the rights of journalists, as well as their salary and treatment, are issues that we should have been dealing with for years. Meanwhile, year after year we see how Albania degrades in the ranking for free media and how politics and power exert pressure.

There are many lovers of democracy; but one of the main pillars is the free media. Time to take another direction", writes Tabaku.
