Lawyer Kreshnik Spahiu has commented on the latest developments in the Democratic Party.
Invited to Euronews Albania, Spahiu emphasized that there is no real opposition in Albania since its two leaders Lulzim Basha and Sali Berisha are hostages of Prime Minister Rama due to the files in the justice system. According to him, Rama has a tangential influence on the justice bodies by holding the opposition leaders hostage.
Spahiu underlined that the majority is overthrown only if a new opposition arises or if there are cracks within the Socialist Party.
"Today there is no real opposition because the opposition is hostage to the files that Edi Rama manages through a tangential influence on justice. There is no need to directly control a body of justice, we live in a small country where officials understand by smell what must be done. I find it difficult to believe in the absolute independence of justice. Edi Rama will endanger power when a new opposition is born. Neither Edi Rama nor the old opposition allows this new opposition. At the moment when a movement goes against the old establishment, it is dead and not only in Albania. The second possibility of Edi Rama's downfall is the internal split of the SP," said Spahiu.
Spahiu added that for several years now, the opposition is no longer an advocate for the causes of the citizens, who have already lost their trust.
"Regarding the role of the opposition, I think that popular causes have been orphaned for several years, which means that they no longer have political lawyers to represent them. Since May 14, we have not seen any protests. It is not about the Democratic Party or the Forum, there are no more opposition forces to appeal to the public for certain causes. This is for several reasons. The first causes are exhausted and consumed. They no longer have supporters and have lost their strongholds", said Spahiu.
