Swiss media: Why does the EU tolerate the growth of organized crime in Albania?
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen and Rama

The Swiss media "Blick" has dedicated an article to the recent arrests in Albania, among which it mentions the handcuffing of Ilir Meta as in a scene from action movies and the arrest of Jurgis Çyrbe, the socialist deputy who was catapulted directly from the ranks of the gangs to the seats of the parliament.

According to Blick, Albania has not lacked help to control corruption, but Prime Minister Rama is accused by political opponents of turning the country into an autocracy filled with drug money. Or, more precisely, that "it has tolerated the growth of organized crime," writes Blick.

The explanation for this, the foreign media finds in the behavior of the leaders of the European Union who consider Rama as the pet, for which the EU has turned a blind eye.

"In June, the Albanian prime minister was asked by an Italian journalist how it was possible that one after another of his close circle, including several ministers, were arrested for corruption, but he was still in office? The cold answer of the Albanian Prime Minister: "There is no forest without pigs".

But there is another answer to the question of why Rama has not been put under pressure yet: He is the darling of the EU.

In January, he was the guest of honor at the CSU summit in Bavaria. In May he spoke together with German Minister of Economic Affairs Robert Habeck in Aachen. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was allowed to spend family holidays at his private villa. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen addresses Rama as "dear Edi".

Frauke Seebass, expert on the Balkans at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, told "Spiegel": "The Rama phenomenon should be seen in a wider context. From the perspective of the EU, it is a business approach to the stabilization of the Western Balkans. Unlike Aleksandar Vucic in Serbia, for example, Rama is not considered anti-European and is much easier to deal with." The consequence: "This is why they decided to turn a blind eye, or maybe two," writes Blick.
