The Albanian Parliament is expected to issue a final statement regarding the Prosecutors' request, which seeks a 180-year prison sentence for former KLA leaders, who are being tried in The Hague.
The statement, drafted by MPs from the ruling party and the opposition, expresses support for Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi.
The statement expresses total support for the Kosovo liberation war, while the prosecutors' request for a sentence of 180 years in prison is considered a dangerous distortion of history.
Through the declaration, the Assembly reminds the international community that the KLA war took place in conditions when the Milošević regime was committing ethnic cleansing and genocidal acts against the civilian population of Kosovo, and that NATO's intervention in 1999 confirmed the legitimacy of that war and the criminal nature of the Milošević regime.
“The Assembly, bearing in mind the historical truth of the KLA war, emphasizes that this army was a legitimate liberation movement that fought for human rights. The Assembly notes with concern that the request of the Special Prosecution risks creating a dangerous distortion of history, equating the legitimate struggle of a people for survival and freedom with the crimes of the Serbian regime, which committed ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity against the people of Kosovo.
The Albanian Parliament declares full and unconditional support for the leaders of the KLA, who were and remain representatives of the aspirations and rights of the people of Kosovo for freedom and self-determination. Their struggle was just, based on the universal principles of human rights. It requests the Specialized Chambers in The Hague, the international community and international justice institutions to declare the innocence of Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selim, through a fair and impartial process that respects and does not violate the dignity of the liberation war of the people of Kosovo.
The Assembly reminds the international community that the KLA war took place in conditions where the Milošević regime was committing ethnic cleansing and genocidal acts against the civilian population of Kosovo, and that the NATO intervention in 1999 confirmed the legitimacy of that war and the criminal nature of the Milošević regime. It expresses its full solidarity with the people of Kosovo and the families of the KLA leaders, reiterating that the Albanian nation stands united in defending the historical truth and the dignity of the struggle for freedom.
"The Assembly expresses its commitment to take every necessary diplomatic and political step in international forums to ensure that the historical truth about the KLA war is not violated and justice is fairly exercised ," the statement said.
