In Belgrade, tens of thousands of students, professors, war veterans and citizens filled the streets against Aleksandar Vučić. In Tirana, the Albanian opposition held a no-contest referendum to confirm Sali Berisha. Two Balkan capitals, two completely opposite views of what is called the opposition.
On the evening when the Democratic Party in Albania was counting the votes of an unrivaled process, Belgrade was seething with a massive civic revolt.
Slavija Square, the heart of the Serbian protests, was filled with rivers of people coming from all directions. Columns of protesters marched for more than 30 minutes near the Serbian Presidency and Parliament, while the main streets of the capital were blocked by the crowd that continued to grow by the hour.
Serbian media reported that the protest resembled the historic March 15th one, one of the largest mobilizations against Vučić's regime. Organizers spoke of over 100,000 participants, while the Archive of Public Gatherings warned of manipulation of the figures by the police and pro-government media.
The students, who have become a symbol of the revolt in Serbia, were not alone. They were joined by university professors, rectors, artists, war veterans, activists and opposition parties from across the country.
" You were silent, and when you spoke, you insulted the citizens who stand with us ," declared a student from the stage in Slavija, calling the protest "the demand of a rebellious people and not just of students."
The rector of the University of Arts, Mirjana Nikolic, directly attacked the regime: “ Those who think they are the masters of this country are afraid of people who think with their own heads .”
Meanwhile, Vučić's regime reacted with tension and fear. Serbia suspended train services across the country after an anonymous bomb threat, a move that the opposition and European Parliament members interpreted as an attempt to prevent citizens from protesting.
Numerous police cordons and dozens of special forces vehicles were deployed around the Presidency. Videos of clashes between government supporters and protesters circulated on social media, while the government tried to label the protest as a "circus."
But despite the pressure, people continued to arrive at Slavija from Novi Beograd, Zemun, Čačak, Kraljevo, Niš and other cities. Protests in solidarity with the Belgrade students were organized in many cities.
And on this very day, the exact opposite was happening in Albania.
While Serbian students inspire the opposition and take to the streets against the government, the Albanian opposition seemed locked into a political ritual without competition.
Sali Berisha, 35 years in politics, was running alone for the leadership of the Democratic Party. There was no debate, no rival, no alternative. Only a formal vote and a postponement of the process until 7:00 PM in some branches, due to low turnout.
The irony becomes even more poignant when the two realities are compared:
In Serbia, students are producing new leaders and challenging the establishment. In Albania, the opposition continues to revolve around the same name after three decades.
In Belgrade, the government is afraid of protests. In Tirana, the opposition is afraid of competition.
In Serbia, citizens demand change. In Albania, the opposition votes for continuity.
And while in Slavija there were cries against the regime, in Tirana the democrats voted on a ballot paper with only one name. / Pamphlet
