A few hours after leaving Fier prison, where he spent almost 10 months, Ervin Salianji appeared at the DP headquarters for his first media conference, where he was welcomed by Democratic MP Ina Zhupa.
Salianji considered his sentence political, while emphasizing that he made a personal sacrifice for the benefit of the public interest.
"I was convicted because I took a trafficker to prison, who had political support. But here in Albania, that trafficker is a good person, while the whistleblower is a bad one," said Salianji, repeating several times that the denunciations were made in the public interest, while his trial was political.
He said he was released from prison like any other citizen of Albania, after serving 2/3 of his sentence.
"I am not convicted of corruption or theft, but because I brought a trafficker with political and government support to justice," said Salianji.
He emphasized that the punishment he was given was intended to prevent the government from confronting him in the May 11 elections.
"I have been in political prison for months. We are here with an Albania that, even with my sentence, did not benefit, but regressed in democracy. After 35 years, Albania punishes for the first time for agitation and propaganda. I brought a drug trafficker to justice. This power stems mainly from these criminal connections. I got out of prison, after serving my political sentence. It is a sacrifice on my part, made in the public interest.
I was convicted of false reporting, while no report was made at all. I was not accused of theft or corruption or anything else, but the court's decision says that I intended to overthrow the government and in areas where I wanted to overthrow the government representatives in the area, I should isolate myself before the elections and come out after the elections. The will of an individual decides over every institution, norm and article written in the Constitution. After my denunciation, a convicted drug trafficker went and surrendered to Italy for drug trafficking. My denunciation only 'undressed' the government", said Salianji.
