The government has approved today, by special decision, the priority development areas in the territory of the Municipality of Kukës, within the framework of the new law on the "Mountains Package".
The decision comes just three weeks after Prime Minister Edi Rama's meeting with the country's mayors, where he harshly criticized some of them for inaction, including the mayor of Kukës, Albert Halilaj.
At that meeting, Rama targeted Halilaj, accusing him of unjustified delays in submitting the map with the selected areas. “ Do you hear me, Mayor of Kukes? You hear me but I don’t know if you understand me, because one of the main drivers for the Package was the people of Kukes. You have had all the instruments at your disposal for five months and you still haven’t brought the map, which is quite simple, there is no science ,” Rama declared in the presence of the media.
According to the decision of the Council of Ministers, three priority areas for mountain economic development have been declared in the territory of Kukës. Two of them are located in the Bicaj Administrative Unit with a total area of 651.73 hectares, while the third area is located in the Arren Administrative Unit with 255.56 hectares. These areas will be opened for investments in three main directions: economic development, industry and tourism.
As part of the same initiative, the government has ordered the establishment of task forces in each municipality, composed of three people who will help interested investors be part of the first 500 projects that will benefit from tax-free development permits for a 10-year period.
The Ministry of Economy and Innovation, the State Cadastre Agency and the Municipality of Kukes have been tasked with implementing the decision. The decision enters into force immediately after its publication in the Official Gazette.
