Two days ago, the news was spread that the Assembly of European People's Parties has approved a resolution, proposed by the Greek party, Nea Dimokratia (part of this grouping) on the case of Fredi Beleri, imprisoned for electoral corruption.
"We call on the Albanian authorities to respect the results of the elections and continue with the swearing-in ceremony of the elected mayor", says the statement that speaks of "the rule of law and human rights".
Prime Minister Edi Rama reacted to this resolution of the European People's Parties.
"Interesting! "We appeal to the Albanian authorities"... An appeal without specifying which authorities and, certainly, without being informed that the problem in this case is not the result of the elections, but the result of the courts, which have already rejected such a request" - said Rama.
Beyond the EPP statement and Rama's response, there is something wrong with this resolution.
Diplomatic sources told the DITA newspaper in Tirana that the resolution brought by a Greek party was strongly lobbied to the members of the presidency and governing bodies of the EPP by Thanasis Bakolas, who then distributed it.
And who is Mr. Bakolas?
From an observation on the official website of the PPE, in the structure of this organization, it can be seen that Bakolas is currently the official with the most executive powers in the PPE. He was elected in 2022 General Secretary of the EPP and is simultaneously one of the three members of the governing board of the Presidents of the EPP.
Everyone has noticed that Mr. Bakolas is Greek and the resolution was presented by a Greek party. This could be kept somewhat within the bounds of a strained normality, but it does not end there.
A search by the DITA newspaper on the CV of Mr. Bakolas reveals that before he took the two senior leadership positions in the EPP, he was... an advisor to the Greek Prime Minister Micotaqis and a close person to him for a long time.
"The resolution really bears the EPP label, but from drafting and proposal to lobbying, approval and distribution, it is all in Greek colors," the diplomatic source told DITA./DITA
