Italian Senator Marco Lombardo supports the protests taking place in Albania and seeks clarification on the project in Sazan, questioning the nature of the agreement and its consequences for sovereignty and strategic balances in the region...
While protests against the investment project on the island of Sazan have been ongoing for weeks in Albania, support for the objections raised by citizens has also come from Italy.
Italian Senator Marco Lombardo has reacted publicly to recent developments, stating that the protesters' concerns are not only related to environmental protection, but also to much broader issues that affect national sovereignty and strategic balances in the region.
According to Lombardo, the debate should not be limited to the ecological aspect or the impact that the project may have on the natural reserves and biodiversity of the area. He argues that the way in which the project has been presented and promoted raises a number of questions that deserve deeper analysis.

"There is a part of this story that is rarely talked about and that deserves attention," the Italian politician begins his Facebook post. The senator focuses in particular on the concept of the "private investor," which he says is the most delicate point of the entire debate.
"The point I would like to focus on is precisely the word 'private'. When the buyer is not a completely private entity and when the area for sale is located in a territory that has weight in the international balances of these years, what seems like a real estate operation changes its nature completely. It is not just square meters of coastline that are being purchased. A strategic position is being acquired," he emphasizes.
According to Lombardo, when an entity with significant international political and institutional influence is involved in such a project, it is necessary for public opinion to receive clear answers about the real nature of the investment and its long-term objectives.
One of the aspects that has attracted the most attention in the Italian senator's reaction is the possibility that the territory in question will take on a strategic function in the future that goes beyond tourism.
"A military base could be built there sooner or later. A luxury hotel and a military base are not exactly the same thing," he says.
Lombardo argues that, if such a scenario were to prove true, then the issue would no longer be just about the economic or tourist development of the area.
"If things were really like this, we would be faced with a foreign intervention within the sovereignty of another country; moreover, of a country that the European Union could accept by 2030 and that we should see as a future partner, not as a yard where the powers station their soldiers."
Following his reaction, the Italian senator also dwells on the legal aspect of the agreement, emphasizing that its nature must be fully clarified.
"There is also a legal aspect. If that agreement were truly between states and not between private individuals, then it would be a transfer of territory, which is something completely different from a sale," the reaction further emphasizes.
According to him, such a situation would require other institutional procedures and a direct role of Albania's representative institutions.
"That is precisely why a vote in the Albanian parliament would be necessary, because an international agreement would be made in every respect. And the very fact that it is presented as an agreement between private individuals should make us raise some doubts."
In conclusion, Lombardo summarizes his concerns in several questions that, according to him, still remain without clear answers:
Are we really sure that private individuals are behind this and not a transfer of sovereignty disguised as a real estate operation?
Are we sure that the ultimate goal is a luxury resort and not, tomorrow, a military base?
And the most important question: are we sure that the good that needs to be protected there, beyond protecting the environment and pink flamingos, is not Albania's sovereignty itself?
These are the questions that, according to the Italian senator, deserve clear and transparent answers from the institutions, while the debate over the project in Sazan continues to remain one of the most discussed issues of the moment in Albania./ Pamphlet
