Why have Rama's relations with Vučić cooled? The 600 million euro deal

Six months ago, Prime Minister Edi Rama had promised Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić the purchase of the Albanian mobile phone company "One" and the controlling stake in the media platform "Digitalb" from the state-owned company "Telekom Srbija", in exchange for a staggering sum of 600 million euros.

This was a silent bargain, unconfirmed publicly, but personally guaranteed by Rama himself, who, according to reliable sources close to the government, had considered it part of the political and economic alliance with Vučić in the open Balkans.

Telekom Srbija's plan was not simply an economic investment, but a well-coordinated political operation. After dominating the media market in Kosovo and Bosnia, Serbia aimed to take control of Albania as well, through the mobile network and the main digital broadcasting platform.

If implemented, this agreement would give Belgrade control over information, public opinion, and communication technologies on Albanian territory.

After months of secret negotiations, Rama suddenly backed down. According to sources, American pressure was decisive. The United States has described this agreement as a direct threat to security in the region and a step towards introducing Serbian propaganda into Albania.

On the other hand, Rama did not want to compromise his control over other national media outlets, which are used for the government's political and propaganda purposes.

Rama's withdrawal was experienced as an act of betrayal by Vučić. Since then, relations between them have cooled significantly. Rama has avoided direct contacts, while Vučić has stopped all new investments in Albania, leaving only existing ones in force.

Sources from the region confirm that operators from Bosnia and Montenegro, connected to Serbian economic intelligence networks, were involved in this deal. The objective was clear: to capture the Albanian communications and media market, to use it as a tool for political influence.

It is incomprehensible how no institution in Albania reacted to this serious scandal that crosses the boundaries of national treason.

Rama did not cancel the agreement to protect the national interest, but because American pressure and his media interests did not allow him to give ground to Serbia. /Pamphlet
