After the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry ironized his accusations of Tehran's involvement in the debate about the protests in Albania, Prime Minister Edi Rama reacted with a long message, bringing attention back to Iranian cyberattacks and the sheltering of Iranian opposition figures in Albania.
As the civic protest enters its ninth day and the public debate in the country continues to be dominated by developments in the square, Prime Minister Edi Rama has chosen to engage in a public clash with Iran, following ironic statements coming from Tehran.
Rama's reaction comes after Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei rejected his accusations of spreading disinformation and ironically said that "maybe they will say that even the flamingos were Iranian security agents."
In his response, Rama addressed the Iranian authorities in harsh tones.
“ Oh, really? So now you suddenly care about Albanians? The same Albanians whose institutions, public services and digital infrastructure were targeted in a cyber campaign aimed at paralyzing an entire country, and for which international investigations have traced actors connected to and supported by your regime. We know those traces very well. We know the methods. We know the threats ,” Rama writes.
The Prime Minister argues that the conflict between Albania and the Iranian regime is not related to geopolitical issues or Israel, but to Albania's stance towards Iranian oppositionists.
“ You cannot forgive Albania for giving refuge to Iranian men and women whom you have tried to silence through intimidation, imprisonment and death, simply because they dare to think differently, speak differently or dream differently. But we are Albanians. We do not abandon the people who knock on our door seeking protection from oppression ,” he continues.
Rama also mentioned the cyberattacks of recent years against Albanian institutions, claiming that Albania has already built a defense system that has rendered further attacks fruitless.
" After your major attack, we built a resilient and high-tech cyber shield that has made Albania much stronger and much better prepared to face your desperate cyber attacks, which continue without success ," the prime minister writes.
At the end of the reaction, Rama also focused on the internal situation in Iran and the rights of Iranian citizens.
" The Iranian people deserve freedom. They deserve dignity. They deserve the right to speak without fear. And Albania will never apologize, will never back down, and will never be intimidated for standing on the side of these values ," he declares.
The clash between Tirana and Tehran comes at a time when public attention is focused on civic protests and political developments of recent days. While the government insists that foreign actors are behind some of the narratives circulating on social media, protesters argue that the revolt does not need external impetus, as it stems from years of accumulated dissatisfaction with corruption, governance, and the political class as a whole.
Zvërnec may have been the spark that ignited the reaction, but the fact that the protest has entered its ninth day with high participation shows that citizens' anger goes beyond a single project and is linked to a much broader dissatisfaction with the Albanian political system.
