The Committee for Legal Affairs in the Municipal Council decided to forward to this forum the request of the SP councilors for the dismissal of Erion Veliaj as Mayor of Tirana. The Committee also decided to reject the request of Veliaj, who had previously requested to be present at the meeting, which will be held this afternoon, to give his explanations.
After the meeting of the Committee on Legal Affairs, DP advisor Dorjan Teliti spoke to the media, emphasizing that the opposition has long requested the dismissal of Erion Veliaj and that this decision must be firmly based on the law so as not to be overturned later in court.
"The delayed meeting by the Socialists has just ended. The dismissal of Veliaj has been an early request of the opposition. We have requested this long ago and we insist that the decision be legally uncontestable," said Teliti.
He added that the opposition sought to add to the discussion other violations committed by Veliaj, including taking over the powers of the Municipal Council in 2016, but this was denied.
"Veliaj has the right to be heard, just like any detainee. The Socialists denied him this right today and this will give him a means tomorrow to win the trial and overturn the dismissal in court for procedural violations," Teliti said.
He stressed that the Council should officially address SPAK and the Prisons Directorate to have Veliaj participate in the session, either physically or online.
"It's not that we want to listen to his rhetoric, but we want the decision to be clean, legal and unchangeable. We will vote for his removal today and Veliaj will leave as mayor," Teliti said.
