The Municipal Council will today formalize the request of Socialist councilors for the dismissal of Erion Veliaj as Mayor of Tirana, following the ultimatum that Edi Rama was given by the Socialist National Assembly on September 10.
Within 13 days, Rama forced the SP advisors on the Municipal Council to sign a request for Veliaj's dismissal, setting in motion the Municipal Council, which is expected to propose to the Council of Ministers the removal of the elected Mayor, who has been under the security measure of prison arrest since February 10, 2025.
SP councilors are using a legal clause, according to which if the Mayor does not appear in office for 3 months, he leaves.
But on the other hand, the elected Mayor has asked the Council to be heard, that is, to present his arguments in front of the councilors, who all together in the 2023 elections received fewer votes than Veliaj.
But even this opportunity was not given, and the Mayor was asked to present his claims in writing.
This is the point that divides the positions of left-wing councilors from those of the opposition, mainly the DP, as both those under pressure from Rama and those of Berisha will ultimately unite their votes to remove Erion Veliaj from the Mayor's office.
The Democrats are not discussing joining the votes with the Socialists for impeachment, they are simply demanding a different procedure, claiming that the decision will not be appealable in the Constitutional Court.
And if this procedure is not respected, the Democrats and their allies in the City Council do not condition participation in the meeting, but are ready to vote on perhaps the next pact between Rama and Berisha.
And the formalization of the procedures for Veliaj's dismissal has begun in the Legal Affairs and Social Justice Committee, which will officially review the request, while the decisive meeting of the Municipal Council is scheduled for 4:00 PM. The Legal Affairs Committee is expected to draft a report, which, regardless of the personal beliefs that the councilors may have, will be on the same wavelength as Babloku's firm order: the political annihilation of Erion Veliaj as elected Mayor.
The request, supported by the socialist members of the council, is based on Article 62 of the Law "On Local Self-Government", which provides for the dismissal of a mayor if he is absent from duty for more than three months without interruption.
According to the advisors, since Veliaj's arrest on February 10, Tirana has been without an elected leader and the situation requires an immediate solution.
The Democrats claim that the Socialists are moving towards the stance previously expressed by opposition councilors, who demanded Veliaj's dismissal as Mayor, turning everything that is happening into a game that is being played today between councilors, but in which Edi Rama and Sali Berisha are behind the scenes.
