Today at 09:00, the next preliminary hearing for the "Veliaj" file begins at the GJKKO to decide whether or not to proceed to trial, or to return to SPAK for further investigations.
The session a few days ago, where Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj himself was present, was postponed due to his request to familiarize himself with the acts of the file.
He submitted two requests, the removal of the metal cage during the hearings to guarantee him a fair legal process and respect for human rights, and to immediately make available to him a physical copy of the 60,000-page investigative file.
Veliaj has been in custody since February and is accused of a series of criminal offenses such as money laundering, failure to declare assets, passive corruption in 9 episodes, abuse of office and bringing prohibited items into the cell. His wife Ajola Xoxa is accused of failure to declare assets, concealment of income and money laundering. Also included in this file is former socialist MP Klotilda Bushka, who is accused of actions that hinder the discovery of the truth.
On November 3, the Constitutional Court ruled in favor of Erion Veliaj, keeping him in office as mayor of Tirana. The Constitutional Court overturned the government's decision to dismiss him and annulled President Bajram Begaj's decree calling early elections in Tirana. On November 27, he again appealed to the Constitutional Court, requesting the annulment of the decisions of the GJKKO, the Special Appeals Court, and the Supreme Court regarding the measure of 'prison arrest'.
