Developments in the political arena do not stop. It has been rumored for several days that Meta will be arrested, but SPAK is not acting. On the other hand, Meta returned to the attacks today, as for several days he has been accusing Rama of trying to take the PL's seal just like he did with the DP.
His statements seemed to be in the wake of the usual attacks, but it seems that Meta had an inkling. In addition to SPAK, there may be moves in the Assembly to remove it not only from politics, but also to remove the leadership of PL.
The Assembly has included in the work calendar the legal initiatives of the SP from two years ago, which are related to the removal of Security spies from politics.
The draft laws foresee changes in the law "On guaranteeing the integrity of persons who are elected, appointed or exercise public functions", known as the decriminalization law, as well as in the law on political parties.
In the first case, the removal of the mandate of the deputy is foreseen for the persons who are verified by the Authority for Information on the Documents of the former State Security, AIDSSH, that they were collaborators of the notorious former Security, and in the second case, these persons are prohibited from being leaders of a political party.
Both initiatives belong to the Socialist Party and were submitted in 2022 to the Assembly, after AIDSSH informed the Assembly that an anonymous email had raised suspicions that a senior politician with the initials IM had been an associate of the former Sigurimi. Then it was said that he was Ilir Meta.
The initiatives are scheduled to be examined on May 16, as they are accompanied by the proposals of the opposition. It is not known whether they will be approved or overturned, but if they are approved, Ilir Meta is at risk of losing PL.
Regarding the interventions in the decriminalization law, it is clearly emphasized that the employees of Sigurimi cannot run for mayors and deputies. The path followed for their verification is also shown.
" They cannot run for or be elected deputies in the Assembly of Albania, mayors or councilors in the municipal council, and in any case they cannot receive a function by vote of the Assembly, including the function of Prime Minister or member of the Council of Ministers, or by vote of the municipal or district councils, the persons who are proved by the Authority for Information on the Documents of the former State Insurance, that they were members, collaborators or favored of the former State Insurance, according to the provisions of law no. 45/ 2015 "On the right to information about the documents of the former State Security of the People's Socialist Republic of Albania", or whistleblowers who appear in the documents of the former State Security ", the law states.
Meanwhile, it is further announced that they cannot even hold positions of minister, deputy minister, ambassador and other state functions. So, if this law is approved and if Ilir Meta really turns out to be a Security spy, he will be totally isolated.
Meanwhile, interventions in the law on parties risk removing Ilir Meta from the leadership of the Freedom Party. According to the law, if the CEC finds that the leader of a party has been an associate of Sigurimi, it requests the appointment of a new leader from this party. If the order is not implemented within two months, the leader is dismissed.
" In cases where the Central Election Commission certifies that the chairman of a political party is under the conditions of prohibition according to law no. 138/2015 "On guaranteeing the integrity of persons who are elected, appointed or exercise public functions", as amended" requests the party political dismissal of the chairman and the election of a new chairman within 2 months from the finding. If, after the two-month period has passed, the political party has not implemented the statutory procedures for the replacement of the chairman, or, as the case may be, has not elected the new chairman, then the Central Election Commission decides the immediate ban on the activity of the political party, in in accordance with letter "d" of Article 26 of this law ", the law states.
