Himara is holding local by-elections for the mayor this Sunday. About 23,000 voters will turn to the ballot boxes to give their verdict between the two candidates, Vangjel Tavo of the Socialists and Petro Gjikuria of the opposition.
The elections in the Municipality of Himara are expected to give a solution to a 15-month battle for the first of the Himarjots, a saga that started with the arrest of Fredi Beleri and then the acting mayor, Jorgo Goro.
According to the CEC, the election materials have been sent to CEZ 38 to then be distributed to the 36 voting centers in this municipality. The latter will be open from 07.00 to 19.00.
In Himara, only electronic identification will be applied and the polling stations will be monitored by cameras.
After the close of voting, the counting of votes is expected to start.
The municipality of Himara became the center of a political conflict that lasted about 15 months. It all started in the local elections of 2023, where two days before the elections, on May 12, the opposition candidate Fredi Beleri was arrested for electoral corruption.
Beller won from prison but did not serve a day, although he waged a long legal battle to obtain permission to take the oath, his request was never granted.
The former acting mayor of Himara, Jorgo Goro, who was also arrested on March 23 of this year for the alienation of properties in Himara, also ended up in prison.
The sentencing of Fredi Beleri to 2 years in prison by the GJKKO Appeal paved the way for the resolution of the deadlock in the Municipality of Himara, while the CEC removed his mandate as mayor of Himara.
With two mayors in prison, the Municipality of Himara was initially led by the vice-mayor Blerina Bala, who then resigned and the municipality is currently led by Arqile Bollano.
Vangjel Tavo has only one sign on his side, that of the Socialist Party, while his rival Gjikuria, under the sign of "We win together" of 10 opposition parties, led by PD and PL, proposed and supported by the Union for the Rights of Human (PBDNJ) and minority organization OMONIA.
On May 14, 2023, 7,821 people, or 34.27%, voted in Himare, with Fredi Beleri getting 3,840 votes, only 19 more votes than the socialist rival Goro who got 3,821 votes.
