The Ministry of Justice has reacted after the decision of the lawyers of former president Hashim Thaçi to withdraw from the defense due to non-payment.
The reaction of the Ministry:
In accordance with Administrative Instruction number 08/2022 for the Legal Protection of Persons Accused Potentially of Alleged Crimes in Judicial Processes at the Specialized Chambers, the Ministry of Justice has entered into an agreement for representation with the respective lawyers of the accused persons, in this case, with the protection of Mr. Hashim Thaçi, in which case, the withdrawal of protection is reported due to the non-realism of the payments.
In accordance with the Instruction and such Agreement (legislation in force), the Ministry of Justice has performed all obligations related to the payment or compensation of the protection of Mr. Hashim Thaci. Moreover, only for the year 2023, the Ministry of Justice has made payments to the defenders of Mr. Hashim Thaçi in the amount of 1,371,800.00 Euro.
Payment for the protection of Mr. Hashim Thaçi have been realized for the years 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
For the year 2020, a payment of 83,107.41 Euros was made, for the year 2021 a payment of 1,114,901.00 Euros was made, for the year 2022 the payment was made in the amount of 996,600.00 Euros, and for the year 2023 - a payment was made in the amount of 1,371,800.00 Euros.
For all years, the amount of payment for the protection of Mr. Hashim Thaçi, is 3,566,401.41 Euros.
For further clarification, the Ministry of Justice makes payments only with the lawyers with whom it has an agreement, in accordance with the legislation in force.
Currently, the Ministry of Justice has an Agreement with the defense lawyer of Hashim Thaçi, Luka Misetiq, to whom, in accordance with the Agreement, he makes all payments on time.
While for other potential lawyers, even private ones, who are engaged by Mr. Thaçi, the Ministry of Justice does not have an Agreement and is not responsible for the realization of payments.
So, the Ministry of Justice, in accordance with such Instruction and the legislation in force, has made timely all payments and obligations for the protection of Mr. Hashim Thaci.
