The Kosovo police have arrested two people suspected of war crimes in Kosovo during the years 1998-1999, in two separate operations in the last two days.
The suspect with the initials Zh.Z. was arrested on Saturday at noon in the village of Lubozhadë in Istog, the Kosovo Police announced in a press release on August 5.
He is suspected of the criminal offense of "war crimes against the civilian population" committed during 1998-1999 in the Municipality of Istog.
"During the time of the war in Kosovo in 1998-1999, he held the position of the commander of the Sub-Police Station in the village of Rakosh in the Municipality of Istog. The same has been brought to the offices of the DHKL, where it is expected to be interviewed in the capacity of the suspect in the presence of the defense lawyer", the Police announcement states.
The arrest of the 69-year-old on Saturday comes just a day after police investigators from the Directorate for War Crimes Investigation handcuffed another suspect on Friday at the Merdare border crossing.
"These investigations have been focused on discovering the perpetrators of the crimes committed in the period 1998-1999 in the region of the municipality of Istog. In the wake of the investigative engagements, it was possible to collect testimonies and evidence for the crimes and the perpetrators of these criminal acts", it was stated in the announcement of the Police on Friday.
The police said that the police investigators have received and processed numerous operational information in terms of the identification, location and localization of the suspect, his activity and movements, in and outside the territory of Kosovo, before arresting the suspect with the initials MP, at the point border with Serbia.
"From the coordination of activities, it has become possible to identify a suspect for war crimes, who at the time of the 1998-1999 war was the head of the militia in Istog. The suspect MP.. by decision of the same prosecutor was sent to custody for up to 48 hours."
The director of the Office for Kosovo in the Government of Serbia, Petar Petkovic, has reacted to the arrest of the MP, opposing the decision of the Kosovar authorities.
He revealed the identity of the first detainee, naming him as Momir Pantiq, and said that "yesterday, he was supposed to receive the documents related to his property in Istog, but instead he was arrested and sent to Pristina".
Pantić is believed to have moved from Istog after the war and lived in Mladenovac, Serbia.
"Prishtina arrests Serbs under the pretext of war crimes and prejudices them, sending them a clear message that they are neither welcome nor wanted in their centuries-old hearths," said Petkovic./ REL
