The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, said that Europe is asking Serbia to recognize the independence of Kosovo.
"De facto or de jure. This is being requested. Let's not lie about this. The biggest power, the European Union, is asking for this," Vučić told Pink TV on January 7.
Speaking about whether the citizens of Serbia can agree for the country to join the EU, Vučić said that he is in favor of this, but half of the citizens are for and the other half are against joining the EU.
He also said that the citizens of Serbia also disagree with regard to Kosovo.
"We can lie to ourselves that we are in agreement on this issue. Of course we don't. Of course, a part thinks that Kosovo should be surrendered as soon as possible because Serbia would be healthier, but they don't say that and they shouldn't say it publicly. Others will say that 'Kosovo and Metohia' must be defended with anyone, but without me and my children" , he said.
Since Kosovo declared its independence on February 17, 2008, it has been recognized by over 100 countries.
Kosovo's independence is recognized by all the countries of the Western Balkans, except for Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the Serbian Constitution, Kosovo continues to be considered part of Serbia.
Since 2011, the EU facilitates the dialogue for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia. This process is supported by the United States.
Last year, the parties reached the Agreement on the way to the normalization of relations and the Annex for its implementation. Despite international pressure for the parties to implement the agreement, the European bloc has said that it is not being implemented.
The agreement, of 11 articles, foresees, among other things, a level of self-management for the Serbian community in Kosovo and mutual recognition of the state symbols, while asking Pristina and Belgrade to also implement all previous dialogue agreements.
The United States has repeatedly said that the dialogue for the normalization of relations should be concluded with mutual recognition between Kosovo and Serbia.
