The EU mediator alludes to the involvement of the Serbian state in the Banjska attack
From the forum of Thessaloniki, the mediator Miroslav Lajçak has for the first time thrown accusations about the involvement of certain structures of the Serbian state in the attack in Banjska on September 24.
"What happened on September 24 is serious, a violent attack, some people even call it a terrorist attack. 22 cars heavily loaded with weapons that had illegally entered Kosovo were seen at the scene. It remains unclear what their reason was, but it is clear that they failed. We think that such military activities of this level could not happen without the involvement and support of some state structures across the border."
Politically, it was an unfortunate moment that has brought damage to the continuation of the dialogue, destroying even the little trust that existed between the two parties. Every part of this region is affected by the tense situation between Kosovo and Serbia.
In terms of integration, Lajcak said that Ukraine has opened the door of the EU for the states of the Western Balkans, while the question now remains whether they will be able to enter that door.
"It may sound ironic, but it was the Russian aggression against Ukraine that brought back Brussels' attention to the Western Balkans. Ukraine has opened the door of the EU for the countries of the Western Balkans. The question now remains whether they will be able to enter that door. It is the first time in these 20 years that I have been engaged with the EU that I see that Brussels is more interested in integrating this region as quickly as possible than the Balkan states themselves. This moment when the window of opportunity has opened must be used by these countries, otherwise it would be closed again, as has unfortunately happened in the last ten years."
Lajçak also emphasized the economic growth of the region to face that of the EU before their accession.
"The economic growth plan of 6 billion euros for this region is like the Marshall plan after the Second World War. The economy of the Western Balkan region must be able to be competitive as part of the European common market because otherwise their economies would be destroyed. We need to make important decisions now before the European and US elections because if we wait for spring the Western Balkans will be forgotten."
The next opportunity for the EU to open negotiations with Albania with the first chapters of membership and for positive decision-making for other countries in the region is the EU-Western Balkans Summit, which will be held on December 13, following the last meeting of the European Council for this year. on December 24-15 in Brussels.
