NATO has authorized additional forces for Kosovo after the September 24 attack on the Kosovo police, where officer Afrim Bunjaku was killed.
In a NATO announcement, it is stated that the Council of the Alliance met today to discuss the situation in Kosovo, expressing deep concern for the growing tensions in the north of Kosovo.
The announcement states that KFOR has a visible presence throughout Kosovo and will take all necessary actions to maintain a safe environment and freedom of movement for all those living in Kosovo.
"NATO's KFOR mission maintains a visible and agile presence throughout Kosovo. We will always take all necessary actions to maintain a safe and secure environment and freedom of movement for all people living in Kosovo We do this impartially and in accordance with our UN mandate.
Since May, we have improved the presence and posture of KFOR. Just yesterday the North Atlantic Council authorized additional forces to address the current situation.
We will always continue to ensure that our commander has the resources and flexibility necessary for KFOR to fulfill its mandate. We are ready to make further adjustments to KFOR's stance as needed.
KFOR continues to coordinate closely with all relevant stakeholders in Belgrade and Pristina, as well as with the EU Rule of Law Mission (EULEX), the OSCE, the UN Mission in Kosovo and the diplomatic community.
We call on all parties to urgently de-escalate. We continue to call on Belgrade and Pristina to engage in EU-facilitated dialogue as the only way to resolve outstanding issues and reach solutions that respect the rights of all communities. This is the key to sustainable security in Kosovo and stability in the region," said the NATO announcement.
