The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, called on Kosovo and Serbia to refrain from actions that could increase tensions between the two countries. Stoltenberg made this statement at a press conference held today at the NATO headquarters, on the eve of the meeting of the defense ministers of the NATO countries, which will be held on February 14.
During his statement, Stoltenberg said that the only way forward for Kosovo and Serbia is the dialogue facilitated by the European Union and appealed to the parties to engage in talks.
"We have seen increased tensions in Kosovo and other parts of the Western Balkans in recent months. My message is that all parties should refrain from inflammatory language and actions that could further escalate tensions in the region. When it comes to Kosovo, the way forward is EU-facilitated dialogue, and I encourage Pristina and Belgrade to engage in dialogue in good faith," Stoltenberg said.
Stoltenberg also stopped at the attacks in the North of Kosovo, where he said that to guarantee a safe environment, NATO has added hundreds of military troops.
"As a result of the attacks we have seen in Kosovo in the last year, NATO has increased its presence. "NATO is there to ensure a peaceful and safe environment for all communities and we have added hundreds of troops to ensure that we fulfill the mandate received by the United Nations," added Stoltelberg.
