The extraordinary session of the United Nations Security Council on the situation in Kosovo has started in New York, following Serbia's request.
Kosovo is represented by Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Donika Gërvalla, while Serbia is represented by Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic. In this emergency meeting, the decision to ban the use of the dinar by the Central Bank of Kosovo will be discussed.
In the opening speech, the head of the UNMIK mission, Caroline Ziadeh, accused Kosovo of provoking tensions with the Central Bank's decision to ban the dinar.
" Regardless of legality and rationale, actions must be taken with consideration of the impact on the affected population. On the contrary, these actions increase tensions ," said Ziadeh.
In the report, she mentioned the agreements reached last year and the attack in Banjska, which she described as a very serious incident.
Meanwhile, the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, in his speech accused the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, of persecuting the Serbs of Kosovo.
He also accused the Kosovo institutions of creating unbearable conditions for the Serbs, adding that they have also carried out systematic attacks and persecution. He emphasized that these policies of Kosovo can cause irreparable damage to Serbs in Kosovo.
They may cause irreparable damage until the next UNMIK reporting meeting. We requested this meeting because of the action of the so-called Bank of Kosovo to ban the dinar. The so-called leadership has continued attacks on the Serbian population and it has culminated as their survival in the southern province depends on Serbia's budget. This is an attack on the Serbian population and makes the situation in Kosovo difficult. Prishtina is preventing the actions of all health, cultural and educational institutions that provide basic conditions. Any prevention of financing of hospitals, schools and nurseries in Serbia is a direct attack on the Serbs and on the establishment of the Association ", said Vucic.
Vucic further said that there have been recorded about 470 ethnically motivated attacks against Serbs and the Serbian Church in Kosovo, since the time when the government was led by Albin Kurti.
" He is at the forefront of the persecution of Serbs ," Vučič declared.
We remind you that on Monday, Serbia requested an extraordinary session of the UN Security Council due to the situation in Kosovo, which it claims is "in strong contrast with the UN Charter and Security Council Resolution 1244 UN".
Twice a year, in April and October, the UN Security Council holds regular sessions on the situation in Kosovo, where the six-monthly reports of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the work of the UN Mission in Kosovo are discussed. Kosovo (UNMIK). The last such hearing was held on October 23, 2023.
