Osmani asks the EC to impose punitive measures against Serbia

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, said that the investigations so far carried out by the local authorities, supported by international partners, "proved that Serbia stands" after the September 24 attack in Banjska in Zveçan. She demanded that the European Commission take punitive measures against Serbia.

During a media conference, Osmani said that her country is asking the European bloc to impose measures against Serbia because of Banjska, after the member states have completed their procedures for confirming the details of this event.

She said that Kosovo is not asking for sanctions, because every member state has the right to veto in the EU Council and at least one state - without specifying which state it is - would use the veto on this matter.

The European Commission, Osmani said, has the right and competence to introduce political and financial measures that do not require the approval of the Council.

The EU has said that they are waiting for the end of the investigations of the Kosovar authorities for the events in Banjska and then new measures and steps can be taken.

The European Parliament is expected to approve a resolution on October 19, which, according to Radio Free Europe's sources in the European bloc, will require the imposition of punitive measures against Serbia.

An armed group of Serbs attacked the Kosovo police on September 24, killing Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku. Serbia has denied having a hand in this attack.

During the conference, Osmani said that there are four elements, which according to her lead the responsibility for the attack through the command line, "to the Serbian president [Aleksandar Vucic]".

The first, according to her, has to do with the financing of this group - which Kosovo has said consisted of more than 80 armed people - the second with the weapons used, which according to Osmani were "produced in the military industry of Serbia and are given by the Serbian state to the terrorists who committed the attack".

"The third has to do with the training, which even the Serbian state does not deny that it has done for these terrorist groups, and the fourth has to do with the political connections of the Serbian state itself with the terrorists who led this attack." Osmani said.

Osmani blamed the approach of the EU towards Serbia, which according to her has "encouraged" Vučić for such an attack.

"It has already been 12 years in dialogue and it is time for reflection because the approach of these 12 years has encouraged Vucic to use violence and commit an act of aggression against Kosovo. Therefore, we cannot pretend that September 24 did not happen. The entire dialogue process should be rethought in the light of what happened on September 24, knowing that it is a violation of Article 3 of the Agreement towards normalization and its Annex," said Osmani.

The responsibility for organizing and leading the attack was taken by the former vice-president of the Serbian List, Millan Radoicic.
