Pope Francis condemned violence against women as he spoke about Italy, a country struggling to move away from a culture of male chauvinism that has often led to femicide.
The Pope had earlier made several appeals to end violence against women. But the words used on the issue on Monday were the first since 22-year-old student Giulia Cecchettin was brutally murdered in Italy in November.
Her murder prompted protests and calls for respect for girls to be included in school curricula from the lower education cycle.
"Every society must accept the gift that is a woman, every woman: so that they are respected, protected and known that anyone who hurts a woman blasphemes God," said the Pope.
Italian lawmakers have unanimously supported several measures aimed at reducing violence against women, after the murder of the student reopened the national debate on the issue.
The student's ex-boyfriend has admitted the murder, his lawyer said.
According to Italy's Ministry of the Interior, over 100 women have been killed in 2023, half of them by their partners or ex-partners./REL
