The EU spokesman, Peter Stano, was asked about the kidnapping of three Kosovo policemen by the Serbian special unit. In his answer, he said that they are following this urgent issue closely and that they are in contact with both parties and KFOR.
" This is an issue that we are following closely and it is an urgent issue. We are in contact with both parties, as well as with KFOR, which is important in this context to understand what happened and how it happened. We urge Kosovo and Serbia to refrain from any action or reaction that would contribute to the heightened tensions," Stano said.
What is happening in the north of Kosovo?
The situation in the north of Kosovo continues to be tense. The day before (June 14) in the vicinity of Leposavic, 3 members of the Kosovo Police were taken hostage by the Serbian Special Forces 'Cobra'. The incident happened when the three policemen were patrolling the border, in the place called Tresave/Bare.
According to the Government of Kosovo, this is a response to the arrest 2 days ago in North Mitrovica of Serb Millun Millenkovic, one of the organizers of the violent protests in the North. Serbia has rejected all claims. The situation escalated on May 29, when local Serbs clashed with KFOR soldiers guarding municipal facilities. That day, 30 KFOR soldiers, 11 from the Italian contingent and 19 from the Hungarian contingent were injured. The international factor has made continuous calls for the reduction of tensions and, finally, some have demanded the holding of new elections in the north.
