The head of NATO said that the event of September 24 is a signal that the conflict in the region could return, but made it clear that KFOR will be there to ensure that this does not happen.
The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has sent a clear message from Prishtina that NATO will not allow any conflict center there.
As rumors have increased that Moscow is attempting another war in the Balkans, the head of NATO went to Pristina today. After a meeting with President Vjosa Osmani, he said that the increase of the military presence in Kosovo by 1,000 troops - which constitutes the largest deployment in recent years of the alliance - shows how seriously the alliance takes the violence that erupted in Kosovo in recent months.
The head of NATO said that the event of September 24 is a signal that the conflict in the region could return, but made it clear that KFOR will be there to ensure that this does not happen.
" In September we saw outbreaks of violence in northern Kosovo, which raised concerns about how a wider conflict could return to the Western Balkans. In May, KFOR troops were attacked, leaving 93 NATO soldiers seriously injured and some scarred for life. Such violent attacks are unacceptable, the perpetrators of the attack must be held responsible ", the NATO secretary emphasized.
He added that NATO will implement the mandate of its mission in Kosovo, KFOR, to provide a safe environment for all communities. He also welcomed the new draft statute for the establishment of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority.
The establishment of the Association "would be a key step towards the normalization of relations and towards sustainable peace in the region", said Stoltenberg.
Asked about the possibility of Kosovo becoming part of the Partnership for Peace Program, Stoltenberg said that a unanimous decision of all members of the alliance is required for this.
Before Kosovo, Stoltenberg stayed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he met with the heads of state and the high international representative, Christian Schmidt.
In Sarajevo, the head of NATO said that the alliance is concerned with the rhetoric of separation and with Russian influence in the region.
