The US State Department said it continues to call on Kosovo and Serbia to take immediate action to de-escalate the situation in northern Kosovo.
" The United States and the European Union have made our expectations clear to both sides. These discussions are continuing ", said a DASH spokesperson for Radio Free Europe when asked how Washington comments on the five-point plan of the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, to reduce tensions in the north.
The first point of the plan presented by Kurti on Tuesday is the rule of law, which according to the Kosovar Prime Minister means the identification, prosecution and fair trial of all members "of the criminal groups that have attacked the Police, NATO troops and journalists ” in the north of Kosovo.
On June 13, the Kosovo Police carried out an operation in North Mitrovica, where they arrested Millun Millenkovic-Llune. According to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Kosovo, Xhelal Sveçla, the arrested person is Millun Millenkovic-Llune, whom the Minister of the Interior, Xhelal Sveçla, has described as "one of the leaders of the criminal formation 'Civil Defense' and the leader of criminal gangs that they have terrorized our citizens for years". According to Svečla, he was one of the organizers of the attacks on NATO members in Zveçan on May 29.
" Those who are responsible for the violent attacks must be held accountable, after a proper legal process and with full transparency ," said the DASH spokesperson. The USA and the EU have presented Kurti with three demands: the calming of the situation in the north, the holding of new elections in the four municipalities in the north and the return to the dialogue for the normalization of Kosovo-Serbia relations.
The tensions in the north of Kosovo started on May 26, when the Kosovo Police helped the Albanian mayors of the Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq municipalities to settle in the municipal facilities, despite the resistance of the local residents.
These mayors were elected on April 23, votes that were boycotted by the local Serbian parties and population.
Tensions culminated on May 29, when local Serbs clashed with soldiers from the NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR. Dozens of people from both sides were injured from the clashes./ REL
