The spread of artificial intelligence is rapidly growing around the world, with machines having an increasing ability to perform work tasks that overlap with a number of professions.
This chart is based on data from Microsoft Research, which analyzed how people used artificial intelligence and how closely these tasks corresponded to professional activities.
For the analysis, Microsoft evaluated 200,000 conversations of US users on Copilot in 2024.
The conversations were measured by how well the AI performed the tasks. Second, the applicability of a task to each job was analyzed. Each job was then given an overall score based on these metrics, with a higher score indicating greater exposure to AI.
Translators ranked first overall, as 98% of job functions corresponded to Copilot conversations with relatively high completion rates.
As we can see, some knowledge workers, such as historians and writers, had high levels of overlap. Meanwhile, flight attendants and customer service representatives, who together represent nearly three million jobs in America, rank among the top 10.
Interestingly, hosts and hostesses illustrated high exposure, yet it remains questionable whether both restaurant owners and customers would enjoy a machine that performed functions in a dining environment, at least in today's world.
