Prominent Turkish actor Can Yaman and actress Selen Gorguzel were among seven people detained overnight in a drug operation in Istanbul that saw raids on nine nightclubs, as the investigation into celebrities and drug-related crimes expanded, CNN Turk reports.
Yaman, well known in Italy for his role as Sandokan and in several successful television series, was arrested along with 6 other people, including actress Selen Gorguzel.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office's Smuggling, Narcotics and Economic Crimes Investigation Bureau is conducting the investigation.
In recent weeks, as part of the same investigation, more than 20 entertainment personalities, VIPs and journalists were arrested by police.
Yaman, along with other arrested individuals, including club owners, was taken to the Istanbul Forensic Medicine Institute to be tested for possible drug use. The investigation was conducted by the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor's Office's Smuggling, Drug Trafficking and Economic Crimes Investigation Bureau.
During the operation, law enforcement carried out overnight raids on nine nightclubs in the city, leading to the arrest of several drug dealers and the manager of the clubs suspected of distributing drugs. The investigation, which had been ongoing for weeks, had already led to the identification of over twenty VIPs, celebrities and journalists, who had been placed under surveillance as part of the same investigation.
According to Turkish media reports, the prosecutor's office had not issued an arrest warrant for Can Yaman as part of its ongoing investigation.
The actor was allegedly found with narcotics on him while inside one of the premises searched during the raid and was therefore taken into custody.
Police raid 9 nightclubs in Istanbul
Police teams, acting on instructions from the prosecutor, raided nine separate nightclubs in Istanbul after midnight. Drugs were found in some of the premises during the raids.
The owners and managers of these establishments, as well as individuals associated with the drugs found, were detained. It was reported that there was information and a statement claiming that Can Yaman used drugs.
Gendarmerie teams carried out a three-hour search of a hotel on the Bebek coast, which was raided again as part of the investigation following the drug operation on January 5th.
Six drug-sniffing dogs participated in the search. The teams left the hotel after placing some of the materials they collected in evidence bags.
Selen Gorguzel, Ayse Saglam, former presenter Nilufer Batur Tokgoz and Ceren Alper were arrested in the operation at the hotel, which is owned by arrested producer Muzaffer Yildirim.
Gorguzel had returned to Turkey from abroad two days earlier. While gendarmerie teams searched the Bebek Hotel, police from the Narcotics Bureau from the Istanbul Police Department conducted a search at Klein Phonix, one of Istanbul's most prominent nightclubs.
The investigation is being conducted for "possession of drugs or stimulants for personal use", "facilitation of drug use" and "encouraging a person to engage in prostitution, facilitating it, or brokering or providing a place for prostitution".
