Hollywood star Charlize Theron has made a shocking confession about the night that marked her life, when her mother shot and killed her father in self-defense.
In an interview with The New York Times, the actress spoke about the traumatic incident in 1991, when she was just 15 years old. As she described it, she and her mother had visited her uncle's house after the movie, and she had annoyed her father because he hadn't announced her arrival before running straight to the bathroom.
"I had to go to the bathroom urgently. So I ran into the house to catch him, and he took it as rude because I didn't stop to say hello to everyone. In South Africa, it's very important to respect elders. And it was in a situation where I just ran away. He said, 'Why didn't you stop? Who do you think you are?'" Theron said.
The actress recalled running away and asking her mother to help her avoid a later confrontation with her father.
"I knew he was angry with me. So I said, 'When he finally decides to come home, please tell him I'm sleeping,'" she said.
"I went to my room, turned off the lights and got scared. My window looked out onto the street and I could tell the level of anger, frustration or displeasure from the way he drove when he arrived. I knew something bad was going to happen," the actress said.

Theron then recalled her father "rushing into the house," shooting "through the metal doors to get inside, clearly indicating he intended to kill them," as she described her mother running to a safe to retrieve her gun before returning to her daughter's room.
"We held the door with our bodies, because there was no lock," she said.
"He just took a step back and started shooting through the door," she continued, adding that it was "crazy" that "not a single bullet hit them."
"The message was very clear, 'I'm going to kill you tonight. You think I can't get through this door? Look at me. I'm going to the safe, I'm going to get the rifle,'" the actress said.
The actress also recalled that both her father and her uncle, who was allegedly with her, were shot.
"He walked to the safe and my mother opened the door while his brother was still there," she said.
"My uncle ran down the hallway and she fired a bullet in that direction, it ricocheted 7 times and hit him in the arm. It's something you can't explain. And then she followed my father, who was opening the safe at the time to get more guns, and she shot him."
The actress admitted that for years she felt like she was "the only person" who had experienced something like this, noting how important it is to talk openly about such experiences so that others don't feel alone.
Now, she says she doesn't let the past haunt her, while acknowledging that her mother chose a way to cope in moving forward.
"The next morning she sent me to school as usual. It was like she was saying 'let's move forward,'" she said.
The actress has spoken about this trauma in the past, as well as violence against women, emphasizing that it is a timeless and global problem.
