Denzel Washington was baptized and licensed as a priest at the 'Kelly Temple of God in Christ' Church in New York City.
"We celebrate the addition to the clergy of Rev. Denzel Washington, who was licensed as a priest at the Church of God in Christ today, in a truly uplifting moment,” wrote Archbishop Christopher Bryant on Facebook, where he shared a photo of the 69-year-old actor's baptism.
In his remarks at the end of the ceremony, Washington recalled how his mother told him, "the eighth or ninth time I've lost an Oscar," that "man gives the prize, God gives the reward." He went on to say that a woman named Ruth Green predicted when the actor was 20 years old that he would "travel the world and preach to millions."
"Fifty years later ... if (God) can do this for me, there's nothing He can't do for you," he said. "The sky is literally the limit, and there is no limit to the sky. God is always good.'
Washington, whose father was a pastor at the Church of God, said, "I'm grateful for everything God has given me in my 70 years," including a "loving, faithful wife." His wife Pauletta Washington accompanied him to the ceremony.
