The President of the Moroccan Football Federation, Fuzi Lekja, has spoken again about Lamin Jamal's decision to represent Spain on the international stage, instead of Morocco. In an interview with "Onze Mondial", he stressed that the Moroccan Federation has always respected the choice of the Barcelona talent and has never changed its attitude towards him or his family.
"We have respected Lamin Jamal's decision and have never questioned it. We have never changed our attitude towards him or his family, who continue to spend their holidays in Morocco. They will always be welcome ," Lekja declared.
However, the head of Moroccan football also made a comment with ironic notes, which is expected to provoke reactions.
" Lamin Jamel. I don't know any Spaniard called Jamel ," he said, alluding to the Moroccan origin of the Spanish national team star.
The footballer's full name is Lamin Jamal Nasraui Ebana. On his Barcelona and Spain national team jerseys, he uses the names "Lamin" and "Jamal", which are reportedly a tribute to the two people who financially supported his family before he was born.
Despite the joke, Lekja underlined that the Moroccan Federation does not see Jamal's selection as a loss or reason for dissatisfaction.
" For us it has never been a matter of frustration or pride. Football is universal and choosing a national team does not change a player's connection to his country of origin. Our history makes us proud even when a footballer of Moroccan origin contributes to the successes of a friendly national team like Spain ," he said.
Shortly before the start of the World Cup, Lekja made another humorous comment, expressing his desire for a match between Morocco and Spain.
" To see if Jamal made the right choice ."
Such a challenge could take place in the semi-finals of the tournament, if Morocco eliminates France and Spain overcomes Belgium.
