New episodes of 'The Crown' feature Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed on their fateful stopover in Paris, before their planned return to London.
The princess sent a member of the Egyptian businessman's staff to buy a birthday present for her youngest son, Prince Harry.
The Netflix series then shows him wrapping a PlayStation in the Eiffel Tower and with a note that read: "Happy birthday Harry, with love, mom."
It was August 30, 1997, and the prince's birthday is September 15.
Did Princess Diana really buy a PlayStation in Paris? Even Harry himself doesn't know the truth, but he remembers getting an Xbox from his aunt for his birthday, who told him Diana bought it in Paris.
In his autobiography 'Spare', Prince Harry details his return to Ludgrove School shortly after his mother's death.
"The day after returning, it was my birthday. September 15, 1997. I turned 13 years old," he writes. “In the long tradition of Ludgrove there would be cakes, sorbets and I was allowed to choose two flavours. I chose black currant and mango. Mom's favorite. Birthdays were always important at Ludgrove because every boy and most of the teachers had an appetite for sweets. Often there was a violent scramble for the seat next to the celebrant: this secured the first and largest part.”
And he continues: “Aunt Sarah was holding a box and saying open Harry. I tore the wrapping paper, the tape. I looked inside. What…? Mom bought it for you. A little while ago… You mean in Paris? Yes. Paris. It was an Xbox. I was happy. I liked the video game. That's the story."
What is the truth about Diana's gift?
Immediately after the publication of his biography, the media investigated, noting that the Xbox came out four years later, so it was impossible to receive it as a gift.
However, there is a good chance that Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Diana's sister, gave him a gift from her on his birthday, and the PlayStation cannot be ruled out as the real scenario.
After all, Harry remembers getting a keyboard from his mother.
The Crown creator claimed he hadn't read 'Spare' before working on the final season. "I didn't read a word. Not that it wasn't interesting,” Peter Morgan reported for Variety. “But I didn't want his voice in my head so much. I sympathize, I sympathize very much. But I didn't want to read his book.'
