As companies around the world talk about the wonders of artificial intelligence and how it is "revolutionizing everything," experts have begun to warn about some troubling trends that are emerging.
Instead of using these "chatbots" for work purposes or to make life easier, many people are using them for emotional purposes, for advice, psychological support, and even for romantic relationships.
But psychologists say that excessive use of tools like ChatGPT, Grok, or Replika can lead to addiction and serious psychological consequences.
According to them, frequent use can cause a disconnect from reality, as the way these chatbots react creates a very strong illusion of reality.
Professor Robin Feldman, Director of the Institute for AI Law and Innovation at the University of California, told the Mail Online:
“The overuse of chatbots constitutes a new form of digital addiction.
AI creates the illusion of reality, and it is a powerful illusion.
When someone’s connection to reality is already fragile, this illusion can become dangerous.”
Professor Søren Østergaard, a psychiatrist at Aarhus University, also warns that emotionally sensitive people with a lack of real relationships are more at risk of this addiction.
He explains that most chatbots do not contradict or correct the user, unlike people in real life.
“Large language models (LLMs) reflect the user’s speech patterns and tone,” he explains.
“These programs tend to reinforce the user’s beliefs and prioritize their own satisfaction. What could feel better than talking to yourself, and having yourself respond in the way you want?”
Østergaard, in a paper published in 2023, warned that artificial intelligence could induce delusions in people who are predisposed to mental disorders, such as bipolar disorder.
Researchers point out that AI can fuel these delusions, which makes it even more difficult to break away from addiction, turning it into a dangerous alternative reality for some people.
