"Women over 30 without children, their uteruses should be removed",

The leader of a small Japanese opposition party apologized on Sunday (November 17th) that childless women should have their uteruses removed after they turn 30 so they feel they have a "time limit" on having children.

He appeared to suggest during a debate about falling birth rates in the country that this could lead to women choosing to have children earlier. Naoki Hyakuta, a writer and head of Japan's Conservative Party, raised the controversial idea on a YouTube show on which he was a guest, although he stressed that he does not support it.

In a speech in Nagoya, he admitted that the comments he heard about that statement "were very bitter."

"I will retract and apologize as there were people who found what I said offensive," he said.

He later apologized via X, saying the comments were "undoubtedly extremely harsh", although he had stressed in the debate that the ideas were "science fiction" and "something that shouldn't have happened".

"I apologize to anyone I may have offended," he wrote.

When Kaori Arimoto, a senior member of Hyakuta's party who was with him on the show, said his comments were inappropriate, even if they referred to a "sci-fi" scenario, she replied: "I was explaining about the timeline (that women face in childbirth) in a simple way'.

Arimoto stated that social values are changing rapidly and many people no longer equate happiness with having children, and asked Hyakuta for his views on restoring these values.

Hyakuta responded that reversing this trend would require changes in social structure and suggested, hypothetically, that if women felt a "time constraint" on childbearing, they might choose to have children earlier.

The number of births in Japan in the first half of 2024 fell to the lowest level since 1969, government data showed in September, underscoring the difficult demographic problem facing the country.
