In a few days, a rare astronomical phenomenon, the so-called "black moon", will appear in the sky, writes the Daily Mail.

The "Black Moon" is the second to occur within a calendar month.

Some who like theories link the event to biblical passages that say: "the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light."

But scientists say there's no reason to worry. According to Walter Freeman, an associate professor of physics at Syracuse University, this new moon is no different from any other.

The peak of the "black moon" is expected on August 22. Such seasonal phenomena occur approximately once every 33 months. The next "black moon" is predicted for August 20, 2028.

What makes the "black moon" rare?

The moon orbits the Earth about 12.37 times a year. Most years we see 12 new moons, but occasionally, the time increases to 13. When four new moons occur in a season, the period between the solstice and the equinox, the fourth is called a black moon.

The term comes from astrological circles centuries ago, originally referring to a supposed hidden satellite of Earth, before being adapted to describe this rare lunar synchronicity.

Unlike the familiar blue moon (or the second full moon in a calendar month or the third full moon in a four-moon season), a black moon occurs during the new moon phase. In this phase, the Moon lines up between the Earth and the Sun, completely disappearing from the night sky.

The lack of moonlight can be a boon for astronomers. As IFLScience notes, the Moon's glow often obscures faint celestial objects, making them difficult to see. On August 23, the natural eclipse will reveal details of our Milky Way, star clusters, and even distant nebulae with unusual clarity.

This year's black moon falls right after the Perseid meteor shower, which peaks in mid-August.

Upcoming major lunar events

If you can't see this year's seasonal black moon on August 23, 2025, the sky has more in store.

The next seasonal black moon will occur on August 20, 2028, and will also coincide with a super full moon. The most common “monthly black moon” on the calendar, when two new moons occur within the same month, is predicted to be August 31, 2027.

On the positive side, the next blue moon, defined as the second full moon in a calendar month, will occur on May 31, 2026. Looking further into the future, a seasonal blue moon, the third full moon in a season that expects four full moons, will occur on May 20, 2027.
