The beneficial properties of blueberries and the amount of consumption that can be beneficial for health have been examined by a series of studies published in The Journals of Gerontology.
“ Since the 1990s, research on the health benefits of blueberries has increased significantly. Studies have shown that these fruits have the highest antioxidant activity compared to many other fruits. In addition, many mechanisms have been identified for how blueberries benefit health, such as their anti-inflammatory properties ,” writes Dr. Donald K. Ingram.
One study found that eating 200 grams of blueberries a day can improve blood vessel function and lower systolic blood pressure. Researchers attribute this effect to anthocyanins, which are phytochemicals that give blueberries their dark color.
Other studies have shown cognitive benefits from consuming blueberries. One study found that the high polyphenol content improved memory performance in a group of older adults. Another study examined the benefits of blueberry supplements on memory in both children and older adults with mild cognitive impairment.
