Study: Watching TikTok and Reels is more harmful than drinking alcohol

Short videos on TikTok and Instagram Reels may be more dangerous to the brain than alcohol, according to a new study published in the journal NeuroImage led by Professor Qiang Wang of Tianjin Normal University.

Scientists have found that frequent users of Reels and TikTok experience changes in brain function similar to those seen in alcohol or gaming addiction. Watching short videos activates the dopamine system - the neural circuits responsible for pleasure and motivation.

" Each scan and automatic play causes a rapid release of dopamine, which trains the brain to constantly need rapid stimulation ," the researchers note.

Over time, this leads to desensitization of the reward system: ordinary activities like reading a book, socializing, or even eating begin to seem boring. Furthermore, the dopamine overload affects the prefrontal cortex, weakening concentration, impulse control, and the ability to regulate emotions.

Scientists also warn that watching videos at night disrupts circadian rhythms and melatonin production, which affects sleep and memory. This can make a person more lethargic and less focused during the day.
