The last love letter, the secret of Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day, known around the world as Valentine's Day, has a long, complex, and interesting history that is not simply a modern commercial holiday. Its history stretches from ancient Roman times to the romantic traditions of the early Middle Ages.

The holiday takes its name from Saint Valentine, a historical figure (or several figures, according to historians) from the third century AD. Saint Valentine is believed to have been a Roman priest who was martyred for his faith.

According to traditional legend: Valentine was arrested by Emperor Claudius II for his religious activities and for helping persecuted Christians.

One of the most popular stories is that he helped and cured a guard’s daughter of blindness while he was imprisoned, and when he was executed on February 14, he left her a final letter, signed “from your Valentine.” However, many historians say that the exact historical details about Valentine are unclear, and there was more than one person named Valentine who died for his faith during that period.

Is it related to a pagan holiday?

Some theories suggest that Valentine's Day replaced the ancient Roman holiday of Lupercalia, a mid-February celebration associated with rebirth, fertility, and the rites of spring. But modern scholars argue that the connection between Lupercalia and Valentine's Day is not historically proven.

How did Valentine's Day come about?

The first written word linking February 14th to love appears to be from poets of the early Middle Ages.

Geoffrey Chaucer, a 14th-century English poet, in his poem "Parliament of Fowls," describes Valentine's Day as the day on which birds (symbols of partnership) choose their mates, linking this date to romantic love.

Since then, the tradition has developed...

In the Middle Ages, people began exchanging love letters and poems. Around the 1400s, romantic postcards began to appear. In the 19th and 20th centuries, many other traditions such as flowers, chocolates, and symbolic gifts were added, making this holiday one of the most popular and beloved days of the year.

Today, it is a celebration of love all over the world. Couples exchange gifts, flowers, very often red roses, and love cards.
