A Chinese woman from Jilin province has attracted international attention after revealing she hasn't removed her makeup for 22 years, causing a severe allergic reaction that has disfigured her face.
In a video that went viral on social media, she shows her face swollen, red and covered in pimples, describing the sensation as "thousands of little flies moving around on my face."
The woman, known as Niuyoumian, started using makeup at the age of 15 and never took it off, justifying it with the reasoning that "why bother taking it off if you're going to put it back on tomorrow."
She says she only used water to cleanse her face at night and applied makeup again in the morning. In 2011, she underwent several cosmetic injections, which are suspected to have worsened her condition.
In 2025, she began experiencing severe allergic reactions, including severe redness, swelling, and itching. She describes this as a “hormonal face,” a term used to describe skin changes caused by overuse of makeup and cosmetic treatments.
Growing up in a low-income family, she used cheap makeup, which she suspects contributed to her current condition. However, dermatologists are skeptical that makeup itself could cause such severe symptoms, suggesting that there may be other factors such as the use of harsh products or aesthetic treatments that have worsened the condition.
