The son of former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher has come to the defense of his father after the latter revealed that he was gay.
David reacted after his mother, Cora, stated that she was not aware of her ex-husband's sexual preferences.
"Normally I would not want to talk publicly about family matters because these topics should not be discussed on the Internet. Unfortunately, my mother seems to see it differently. Now it's time to end it: I just want to live my life in peace and achieve my goals without being asked about all the things my mother accuses me and my father of," wrote David Schumacher in the post on social networks, which he later deleted.
He stated that his mother suffers from mental health problems.
"When my parents divorced in 2015, my mother threatened me that if I didn't live with her, she would destroy my life's dream, that is, my dream of being a racing driver," declared David.
The 22-year-old told an incident where his mother wanted to separate him from his father against his will and they had to call the police.
"Because she wasn't in the right frame of mind to take care of me and I didn't want to grow up in an environment where the only thing that mattered all day was 'what a bad man my father was,' I just didn't want to I was closer to her… There was an incident where she wanted to separate me from my father against my will and she succeeded. We had to call the police because she abused my father over and over," David said.
While he added that: "The constant accusations against my father that he put everything in my head and only talks bad about him, are not even close to true."
David Schumacher emphasized that his father did everything possible "for me to have a good relationship with my mother".
“For years, my father repeatedly convinced me to give him another chance. I always block it because I don't have the desire or nerve to go and go through the same thing: reawakening old memories and reliving the same experiences.”
Afterwards, he had a message for the commenters.
"And your behavior now is an absolute disgrace: my parents have been divorced for 9 years! Leave us alone and let us live our lives.”
Cora Schumacher, the ex-wife of Ralf Schumacher, the F1 star and brother of Michael Schumacher, caused a stir in German showbiz after her statement.
The 47-year-old, about a month after he came out as gay, spoke to German magazine Spiegel about her experience from her relationship with Ralf Schumacher during their 14-year marriage, until their divorce in 2015.
"I heard rumors that he is gay, but he told me to go to a psychologist," she said.
49-year-old Ralf Schumacher revealed in July that he is in a relationship with his French business manager, Etienne. He published on social networks a photo with his partner, with whom they are said to have been together for two years.
While it was claimed that his ex-wife was aware, Cora has actually stated that she found out about it on social networks.
Speaking to Spiegel in an interview published on August 16, she also added that she was "manipulated" by her ex-husband during their relationship when she asked him if the rumors she had heard about him being gay were true.
"During his F1 career, there were a lot of rumours. I asked him to clarify if what was being said was true, but he always denied it, telling me that I was imagining it all and that I probably needed psychological help. But when he made the announcement, it was like a knife to the heart. Going public always affects those around you, including your ex-wife with whom you had a child," said Cora.
While he added: "Today I feel that he used me during the marriage and that I lost my best years. I wonder: Was he honest with me? Did he love me? I trusted him blindly and therefore his word was law to me."
Ralf Schumacher denies her statements, claiming that Cora knew since last year what was happening.
He even accused him of lying and published a private conversation as proof.
In his most recent post, Ralf Schumacher writes: "I want to make it clear that Cora congratulated us in September 2023 because she thought we were married."
Despite the apparent conflict between his parents, their 22-year-old son seems very supportive of his father.
In a post on his social media, David Schumacher wrote: "I'm so happy that you finally found someone you feel really comfortable and safe with, whether it's a man or a woman," adding, "I'm with you 100% dad and I wish you the best and congratulations.”
