Prince Leka to Skynews: I am proud of my Australian roots

Prince Leka II has given a long interview to the famous Australian newspaper Skynews, where, among other things, he mentioned his Australian roots from his mother.

While Leka II attributes a drive to serve the country to his father, Leka I, he was equally influenced by his "much-loved" mother, Princess Susan.

Leka II says he is "very proud" of his Australian heritage and attributes an uncanny ability to "read the room" to his late mother's Australian roots.

Born Susan Barbara Cullen-Ward in Sydney, Leka II's mother came from a well-to-do family in the eastern suburbs before meeting the exiled Crown Prince of Albania at a dinner in the mid-1970s.

The couple married in a small ceremony in Biarritz in 1975 and lived in exile in Spain, Zimbabwe and most recently South Africa, where they welcomed Leka II in 1982.

"My mother was a fourth-generation Australian," he said.

"I believe - and I'm not sure about this, so maybe some verification could be done - that she was a descendant of Banjo Paterson."

Leka II says he hopes to visit Australia soon and reconnect with cousins and relatives from the Cullen and Ward families.

"My cousins are urging me to come visit, hopefully next year," he said.

"I know my mother always wanted me to visit Australia."
