The two protagonists of the Netflix documentary "Skywalkers: A Love Story", Angela Nikolau and Ivan "Vanya" Beerkus, have been arrested after illegally climbing to the top of the Empire State Building in New York, where they carried out a spectacular marriage proposal.
The incident took place on July 1, when the couple, dressed in black, climbed to the top of the building's antenna, about 1,400 feet (443 meters) above the ground. Footage broadcast from media helicopters showed them standing on the metal structure without appearing to be strapped in with safety gear.
At the top of the tower they unfurled a banner with the message: "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world knows peace."
Afterwards, Nikolau and Beerkus were seen kissing, taking pictures and selfies, while on a wider platform Ivan Beerkus got down on one knee and proposed to his partner. The moment immediately went viral on social media, while Angela Nikolau's black mask also attracted attention, which many users compared to the character Catwoman.
After disembarking, New York Police officers arrested the pair without incident. Authorities have not yet explained how the pair managed to penetrate the restricted area of the Empire State Building's antenna, but have confirmed that charges are expected to be filed against them.
Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus are known worldwide as part of the community of "rooftoppers", adventurers who illegally climb skyscrapers and very tall structures without using safety equipment.
Their story became known to the general public through the Netflix documentary "Skywalkers: A Love Story" (2024), which chronicles the couple's relationship and their extreme adventures in some of the tallest buildings in the world.
